CEO Jan-Fredrik Carlsen gathers his colleagues for pre-Christmas fun in early December. With the Christmas tree decorated, mulled wine, and Christmas cookies, we look back on what has been an exciting year in 2021 and look forward to the coming year.

The year 2020 was exciting with significant restructuring and growth. We were able to continue this growth into the year 2021 as well. The year proved to be a different year; with a global pandemic, and all the necessary adjustments it brought. As a result of the new situation, we learned to work efficiently through restrictions and electronic aids, both locally and internationally.

Optime Subsea set ambitious goals for 2021 and achieved remarkable growth. This year, we were also named a “Gazelle company” by Dagens Næringsliv. The reason for this growth is the employees, as everyone has a common desire to achieve success. The people of Optime create growth through playfulness, knowledge, cooperation, and innovation.

This year we have had many exciting projects with our cutting-edge technology. 2021 was the year we realized our new system ROCS. We also delivered both the original SCILS and the latest version; BIG SCILS. Simultaneously with these deliveries, we started the development of e-SCILS and the construction of ROCS Deep Water (x 2). The latest addition to our development projects is mSHPU qualification.

We simplify subsea

The ROCS operations we performed can be compared to a Formula 1 pit stop. Between two operations, Optime Subsea’s Aftermarket department performed necessary maintenance – without downtime. In total, we carried out 6 operations with our new technology, ROCS, in 2021.

Keep on innovating

An engineer’s dream project has been E-SCILS; here, you combine wireless and electronics, says Engineering Manager Ole-Ivar Sorensen. Here, we also work closely with our customer Aker BP, an essential partner for Optime Subsea. Maintaining a close partnership with your customers in development projects is vital because they help you go to great lengths to create tomorrow’s solutions.

Another development project where we work closely with our customer, Equinor, is mSHPU. In projects like these, one usually gets busy in the most critical areas. Engineering is about breaking down from system to product. Securing quality throughout projects is about traceability and troubleshooting, says Tor Øystein Carlsen.

Precisely this has been important in realizing this qualification, which we have done on behalf of our customers. This product will lead to many new customers of our systems, which we produce here at the head office in Notodden

Tor Øystein, CTO at Optime Subsea

In true Optime-spirit, we continue to see new opportunities. Our people are constantly coming up with new ideas, which we put into action. With creative minds, we must also look at our processes. Therefore, an important project in 2021 has been Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). We are constantly looking for a more efficient workflow to better link product and production, says Erlend Helgerud. This work has been essential in a year of solid growth.

How to meet tomorrow’s needs

To meet next year’s growth, we got off to a good start in 2021 with an important digitization project – for quality, streamlining processes, and building closer together with our location in Houston. This requires proper systems, individual knowledge and good integrations between the systems, says John Pastor.

“The employees are our most important asset.”

Jan-Fredrik Carlsen, CEO at Optime Subsea

In a knowledgeable company like Optime, you live by the employees’ ideas and “head”. If the people do not function optimally, you will not reach the company’s goals. We must maintain the collective mindset and the desire to succeed, no matter how big our business becomes. Everyone has our mission, “We Simplify Subsea”, in their spinal cord.

That’s why we have fun at work. Our collective “success-formula” means that talking to each other comes naturally for all employees. The “we can do anyting“-wave is bigger than ever in Optime, says CEO Jan-Fredrik Carlsen. Optime Subsea’s growth in 2021 will continue into 2022; this requires structure.

We are continuously searching for the best workflow between every individual and their work tasks while also looking at their potential. That is why HR strategy is essential, says HR Manager Bente Dyste. In our new HR strategy, we work a lot with taking care of the wonderful community in Optime.

We focus on building good relations between us colleagues outside work as well. Optime Challenge was a long-awaited social happening, where we could compete against each other, build team spirit and be social. We hope to have many more such happenings in 2022.

At Optime we spend a lot of money on COFFEE. These random meetings and gatherings are worth their weight in gold. One of the core values of Optime is that we are playful. This means we are curious, exploratory, and creative.

What it is like to be
new at Optime Subsea

As everyone wishes each other success in Optime, you, as a new employee, are also quickly thrown into tasks with responsibility. The learning curve has been steep and exciting as a new employee. On the first day of work, it felt a bit like they said to me: “Welcome to Optime – this is your new project.” Here you get complete confidence and are thrown straight into deep water, says senior project manager Tor Håkon. It is an honor to be considered valuable from day one.

Next year for Optime Subsea

At Optime, we are dedicated to our city, Notodden, and the recruitment of employees. The latest addition to this business collaboration is the development of the website www.notodden.no, which is made for new residents, job seekers, and companies that want to establish themselves in Notodden, says CEO Jan-Fredrik Carlsen.

Optime Subsea ends 2021 by saying: The plans for next year show a steep curve upwards for Optime. We will become even more visible as a company – both in the local community, in Norway, and internationally. After signing the agreement with Halliburton around Easter, they promoted Optime in their network. Optime Subsea is established to grow together with customers, suppliers, and employees.
